safety? is that all you're worried about?? it is true i suppose that a lot of companies under pressure would release products without testing them properly (can we say microsoft?) but we have terrific laws that would allow you to bankrupt the fuckers responsible if you did eat a dud tomato and grow a third arm or something.

i'd be far more concerned with this 'patented DNA' thing that's going on. private entities should not have any sort of legal ownership over life.

I am concerned about that, too!   :x

I watched a doco where Monsanto (in our house they're called Monsatan) are trying to patent the DNA of certain types of pigs, and if you're a farmer with a pig that has that particular strand of DNA, you can be sued by them... that is unbefuckinglievable!

And the way that many plant seeds are now modified so that you only get one crop from the seeds, then you have to buy more to replant the following year. You're not allowed to use seeds from the plants, and some have been modified so that they are seedless. All the farmers who used to use the seeds to bear crops, the way it is supposed to be done, are sued if they do it.

gc, you've really got to find a better source of information than NW magazine, ACA or TT. Doesn't your 'hysterical nonsense' meter go off when you read or write stuff like that?

Here's what Monsanto say they are doing in the name of conservation:

Why is it that if I am concerned about the environment, factory farming techniques, multinational corporations etc. that I am labelled a hippie? Just because I draw a line in the sand when it comes to what I will and won't consume, buy or support, it does not make me part of the great unwashed.

Why is it that most of you consider yourselves intelligent, logical people, yet you can still sit around and judge me for my beliefs? If you really thought about things, you'd see that some of what I say sometimes is logical. For example, more factory farming on such massive scales is going to to impact the environment. Simple.

Then again, maybe I'm just a grumpy PMS-ridden angst-bunny right now.   :-P

You've got to remember, than when it comes to patents, the yanks are alarming stupid. Or more correctly, their patents office is alarmingly stupid. They would have great trouble making their patent claims stand up outside the US, because common sense tells you generalised patents are bad, and should never be granted.

Fortunately the patent thing in Australia isn't quite as bad. The only potential problem is rules of a FTA interfering with our system.

The fact that they are incredibly stupid doesn't let them off the hook. The fact that they have alarming amounts of money enforces their rules. They can bully whoever the hell they like because they can afford to. Is some poor soya bean farmer in Indonesia going to be able to fight back against them?

FTA? Fancy Trout Acrobat? Foolish Topless Armenian? Fritz's Troublesome Acne?

use your brain GC

what would a 'poor indonesian farmer' have that would make the americans want to sue him? not money, if he's poor

suing on principle is an expensive business, and we both know americans are more interested in money than principles.

I think you might have missed the bit where I mentioned a patent in the US is worthless elsewhere. Why would the Indonesian care about a US patent? They don't even care about copyright in most of Asia.
