I have a dream!
« on: May 28, 2007, 10:26:57 PM »

I had originally posted this rant in the Things are shit thread, but it seems more at home in this section and I apologise for those who have responded already.

Martin Luther King once pronounced: " I have a dream"

Fritz is now pronouncing: "I have website"

The slow death of the Chaser thread is looming.  :|

I usually leave rants to others, however, it has dawned on me that those others seem to have slowly disappeared.

It is with concern that the satircal, policitcal and general hanging shit on the world seems to have been lost through the wave of "I love Andrew's Hair".

I miss the days of Heinz engaging in banter of a political argument or some other lunatic taking sides of Bob Brown with not a bad argument. Matters of importance in the world was the topic of the day as oppossed to how white Craig's arse was on the show the other night.

The most I see these days is the odd banter of how shit or great someone's day is. It is a sad day when such an intstitution is starting to look more and more like a Britaney Spears thread. Hell, it nearly got me so bad I was about to invite my friends to my place for a sleep over, read our diaries and then finish the night with a pillow fight. This would not seem that bad if they were 21 year old women, alas they are not.

So what do we do. Well for starters, those that need to masturbate over the style of Andrew's Hair or how hot Chris looks in 19 century constumes, with all due respect - try the chaser website on the ABC link or at least hit your own myspace account where your mum won't hit you over the head everytime she reads that I have called you a mindless, deranged mini fucked up Justin Timberlake. Your parents really don't need to read those types of things about you.

For God's sake, you are even starting to freak out those who are paid to freak people out.

However, it is a good time to intervene and suggest to take a great view of current affairs in the world. Expand your mind, engage in constructive arguments and feel free to post a topic. Yes, there will be those who cannot help themselves and shoot you down, but here is an opportunity to discuss matters such as world politics, Australian politics, social developments or under-developments with the freedom of expressing ideas and not having to worry about the lunatic on the other end of the thread. There is also to opportunity to go to town on someones argument, twist and turn it and generally mess with their heads.

This website once held the motto - "Taking the Piss". Take this to your mind, whenever you decide to post.

Peace be with you. This is the word of the Lord.

"I have a dream" is one of my all time favourite speeches. I have it on my Ipod.

Wish I was around in the days. And honestly, I'm too afraid to post any topics. People will call me a lefty, even though I'm not. I would so love to have a good debate about something.

So..... why would people call you one?  Why do you say you aren't one?  Where is the harm in being called one by people you don't know?

There is nothing wrong with being called a leftie. At least it gives the rights amunition. There is no reason to be afraid to post topics. It is only engaging in coversation that you learn the ability to do four  key things:

1) Question other people
2) Question yourself
3) Learn other peoples opinion
4) Take the piss

You will only learn by jumping in. Ian thorpe had no idea on how to swim until he jumped in the pool. There are times that I may take an opinion that might be construed as being "left". That's what makes the debates great. They give you the ability to question yourself and what you really think. Don't worry if someone takes the piss out of you - because they are taking the piss out of you.

1) Question other people

Do you really think so? That sounds like right wing doublethink to me.

2) Question yourself

I used to disagree, but now I'm not so sure. I question my reasoning.

3) Learn other peoples opinion

Thank you for sharing your opinions, misguided though they are.

4) Take the piss

I'm ignoring you Nick.

I try to do all the stuff you said on a daily basis Fritz, except I'm not witty or very good at taking the piss. I might post something, when I come up with something good to talk about. Or then again, maybe not...

See, in relation to the concerns TRD expressed a couple of posts back... I'm sure if you older (as in, been here longer) members were to start up these such conversations, us young and inexperienced people may be able to learn from what you're saying/how you're saying it, and then we'd be more likely to join in. I appreciate a good debate as much as anyone, they're absolutely fantastic. And you're right, for a forum full of intelligent (perhaaaps) people, and there's not nearly enough arguments to represent that fact.
