That's enough to turn anyone to a '..' :-o

Apparently we have to buy a new tv. Because boys like big shiny flat screen-type TVs and don't think the old boxy ones are good enough, even when theyr're really quite big... I'm not yet convinced that I really need to contribute a whole bunch of my moneys to such a thing... *sigh*

Then don't.  Cheaper to buy a TV cabinet that hides the back of the old one.

This is something I really don't understand - people paying umpty thousand for plasma TVs, which make everything look really wide and short.   :?

a 42" plasma goes for $999 these days.

Hardly a lot to share amongst several.

But who gets it in case of a breakup?

If we didn't have a TV, or maybe just had a teeny tiny one then I'd probably be ok with it. Thing is we've got a 32" TV, which I think is a good size really... I think I'm having "want vs need" issues. Plus I possibly haven't bought into the whole high definition craze because I'm half blind anyway and can't see what the fuss is about :-P

Add to that - they consume a huge amount of energy. I read somewhere that many plasmas use more energy than a refrigerator, which I understand is a considerable amount. Can't be too crash hot for the electricity bill or the environment.

we have a massive crt tv, don't know how big, but it's big. somewhere in the realm of 40" i should think. and apparently it's much more economical than a plasma of the same size.

I read somewhere that many plasmas use more energy than a refrigerator, which I understand is a considerable amount.

Well, the reason fridges use so much electricity is because they are permanently in use.  True, they don't spent all of that time actually refrigerating, but it is still more operation that most appliances.
