Getting permission
« on: April 08, 2007, 10:50:28 PM »

I've noticed that, even though the stuff they do is really funny on camera, there are a lot of people within the stunts that looked quite pissed off when they have a camera shoved in their face (like secretaries at companies and stuff, people on the street who move to avoid them)?

Do the Chaser guys get a signed permission from EVERY single person who turns up?

Coz that's f**king mammoth.

Plus, if they have to, imagine how much footage there is that they can't use - how many jokes go to waste.

They need people they talk to on the streets signatures, yeah. But apparently they are usually happy enough to do so when they hear its for a tv show and all. Not too sure about secretaries and the like though, you'd think they wouldn't agree to it. I'm sure theres some technicalities in the laws or something.

yeah what about those angry bastards who go nuts at julian when he does his ticketing thing? surely they wouldn't want their Mr Angry moment to be memoraxed forever in the ABC archives?

I read in an interview article that the SMH or similar ran on The Chaser not so long ago that basically what they usually do is they tell them (the people on the streets, lets say) just enough information that gains the persons permission, but at the same time not telling them exactly what's about to go on.
So when things happen they aren't acting surprised, they genuinely ARE surprised... which makes for better TV.

I think probably too that now the boys are more well known that it wouldn't be so hard to find willing participants in stunts nowadays anyway, signature or not.

Actually, it was with the Citizens Infringement Officer that I was thinking of when I said what I did before. I'm pretty sure in the dvd commentary for last season, Jules mentioned that it was quite funny how suddenly happy these seemingly pissed off people were once they heard that they would be on tv.

I just watched the DVD with commentary over the piece where Chris puts a stocking over his head and walks into random shops. Everyone, quite understandably, f**ks off scared when they see a man with a stocking over his head walk in.

Chas and Chris talk about how the fact that there's ABC cameras following them around helps put people at ease a bit and, kinda, snap the people out of the "reality" of it all, but they still remain pretty unaware of whats going on.

That was the only piece that bordered on Jackass-style stunts for the show. That's why its the only time ABC Legal made them put a disclaimer at the end of it.

I suspect that by now the Chaser guys are recognizable in public, so when they do vox pops or stunts out in public, people are more aware of the comedy. That's why Sacha Baron Cohen doesn't do interviews as Borat anymore.

Yeah it is interesting that people don't automatically register the cameras and think 'hang on a minute...'

Didn't it also say on that commentary that they had to warn the shop people slightly? Just to make it safer for everyone? Because that was potentially dangerous... sorta... maybe Chris' circulation was in peril...?

Cool. So when I decide to rob a bank next, I'll just make sure I've got a camera with "ABC" written on the side of it to lull them into a false sense of security?

And that's why they put a disclaimer at the end of it.

So just stick the disclaimer to the back of your getaway car, Yak.

I'm sure Today Tonight & ACA don't get written permission from the people they ambush.

So just stick the disclaimer to the back of your getaway car, Yak.

Or better still, to the back of Marcus Einfeld's car which you're using as the getaway car...

Oh god, this again...they warned the people in advance that something weird was goign to ahppen, but told them to act natural.
