Just reposting this from "Episode 2" to the appropriate thread:

I have an idea...

What if you did what some supermarkets do with thier shopping trolleys where you put a coin into the trolley, and afterwards when the trolley is returned, you get your money back.

Maybe you could implement something like that into a ticketing system whereby people pay a couple of dollars, and if they show up, they'll get thier money back.

It'd be a good incentive for people to actually turn up, they'd get thier money back, nobody pays for tickets in the end, you wouldn't have to overbook to fill seats and everybody's happy.

Just a way out thought I had earlier...

That's a terrible idea. What about the people who don't make online transactions such as myself?

And lets not forget about us people that don't have the couple of dollars in the first place. They would have a lot harder time filling the seats if they took away all the dole bludgers, people living with their parents, and BA students.

Not so.  Less than a quarter of the audience put up their hand when asked who earned less than $20K a year.

Well I was surprised at least.

The rest of us, myself included, were simply too lazy to bother extending the arm upwards in such a manner.

I think in general, anything that is free people take for granted and if they miss it they think "oh well, there's always next time" and haven't lost anything from it.
Whereas if it were a U2 concert or something where people paid money for their ticket, they'd actually put in the effort to turn up.

I didn't want to put the idea into anybody's head to start charging for tickets, heck no. But there probably does need to be some kind of incentive for people to show up, and not just put thier name down and forget about it. Maybe a waiting list is better, that way when they do the ring you up just beforehand thing and you say "no", they have something to fall back on.

I wish I lived in Sydney - I would have been in on going outside the ABC and rounding up randoms off the street with anyone else that cared to join in to fill the seats.
But I'm not, and I wasn't in Sydney yesturday.

Bummer aye.  :-)

I've made this suggestion before, but I think a good idea instead of overbooking would be to inform that tickets are all booked out, but people who live/work nearby can opt to go on a list and be 'on call' so if not enough people show up they can be there shortly to fill in the seats.

Everyone over-books. Airlines, hotels etc etc because they know that up to 20% of people are not going to turn up. I'm sure the ABC have some take on what kind of wash-down to expect, and over-book as close to the mark as they can.

They're hard going to sit around ringing people up at the last minute in order to fill up a few empty seats. I'm sure they have better things to do - like serve up vintage comedy to the other million people in the audience at home.

Hmmm. It's a tough one, innit?

Another idea perhaps that could work would be to have a completely different show recorded fairly closely beforehand in either the same or nearby studio in the same building, with a similar target audience (say, Spicks and Specks or something) and if there are empty seats to extend the invitation to individuals of that audience after thier show is finished to go in and sit in on The Chaser, too.

Actually, it's possible they already do this for some shows.

What, and piss off everyone in Melbourne even more??!

They're already sore they don't have Chaser.  Don't take Sp&Sp away from them as well  :)

Ah, and the next stage is that we all get sent a text message, and asked to reply with our name and number of tickets in order to confirm. Spiffy, spiffy.

I will start bawling my eyes out if you move spicks and specks to Sydney.

Yes exactly.

And how are we to give them the couple of dollars in the first place? Most banks charge outrageously for small transactions over the net, and forget paypal!

As for shows with a similar target audience... are there any filmed in Sydney?  :-P

Anyway they worked it out last week - filled up tonnes of seats with ABC employees.

I'd be surprised if they have too little people this week - the first taping you can actually book for, people will be jumping for tickets. Won't they?
