i made my kids write a tribute in their journals today.
i felt disgusted with myself afterwards, but i justify it thus:

1. we had 15 minutes to spare.
2. they wouldn't shut up about it so i thought i'd get it out of their system.
3. they had to do *some* kind of journal writing, and that was an apt topic that appealled to them.

it was interesting that two kids had never heard of him before. they've now become my pets

http://www.smh.com.au/news/business/its-like-jfk-or-diana-for-kids-mother/2006/09/05/1157222122185.html

Steve Irwin had such a profound impact on children that many parents believe his tragic death will be a landmark for kids in the way the deaths of John F Kennedy and Princess Diana were for adults.

....

Daniel, 11, asked: "Why did it have to be Steve Irwin? Why couldn't it be someone older like Sean Connery?"

Now he's dead they want to nominate him for Australian of the Year. Fuck, they always wait for people to die before they recognise them. Did anyone hear what Germaine G said? 'Every animal he dealt with was stessed and traumatised and nature has finally got it's pay back'. Ha. I feel terrible for his wife and children - they were in Tassie when it happened, up at Cradle Mountain, and basically the whole world knew before them. I think it's sad that we've lost a wildlife fighter. But, if you harrass a stingray, it is likely it will get pissed off or scared and jab it's tail at you. His job was dangerous, it was bound to happen sooner or later, but it is still really tragic. I just hate how when people die, suddenly they are so great and loved and we get opinons from people who don't even know him like stupid Americans in their shopping mall, John Howard and anyone who's about.

Wow! Get some random to place your 'farewell message' to Steve at the gates of Australia Zoo!

Where?

eBay of course!

Want something a little more concrete? Why not try a "Memory of Steve Irwin Fridge  Magnet" for only $7.99+p&h!

If you're going to pine for Steve's ocker voice, why not try a talking Croc Hunter figurine? It's description says, "He has 3 saying (you can activate through a hole)"...I hope the 'hole' isn't poorly located  :| Or these Steve and Terri talking dolls that say 12 different phrases each like; "Here's a stick Steve, Danger-Danger-Danger, What a little Beauty, Check out the size of this Bloke!, Crikey, Holy smokes-that was close!" - I'm sure more could be programmed in by the geekier consumers amongst us!

Keep the Steve alive :~)

He can't have been all that bad, he said that Howard was the best leader ever, and that Bob Brown should be taken out and beatne up for interrupting a Bush speech...

Hmmm, brown shirt (khaki counts as brown), and beats up left wingers....sounds familiar...

But thanks Nate, you know we all look to you for guidance.

I wasn't guiding anybody; what I said was in context of him being alive, not dead.

Funny how some people die the way they lived...the Beach Boy who drowned, Mama Cass choking on a ham sandwich, John Belushi overdosing, Billy Sneddon - well, you get the picture.  8-)

There must be lots more examples of this... anyone think of any?

keith moon overdosing on medication to help him kick his alcoholism.

diana with camera bulbs flashing.

harold holt in with the sharks.

marie curie of radiation poisoning.

ones like harold working with sharks and then dying in with them and the beach boy who drowned are more like it. deaths like marie curie and steve irwin are a bit easier to predict/occupational hazards.

Harold Holt is not dead. I saw him having a drink with Elvis the other day in a bar.

Nope, Elvis wouldn't be caught dead in the eastern suburbs
