Recent spam - apology and solution
« on: July 20, 2006, 03:12:02 AM »

Dear Chaser member,

I apologise for disturbing you again. But some automated spam system or other attacked the forum earlier this week and sent porn from an account called "Harrison Ford".

I apologise for the irritation, which has been considerable all round – unsurprisingly, we've been deluged by complaints. (Not to mention the affront to a renowned actor.)

We go to considerable lengths to protect personal information. So to prevent recurrence, I have decided to remove new users' rights to the private messaging system.

New members now cannot send private messages until they have sent 10 regular forum posts. When they have, their group will be updated from 'Fresher' to 'Sophomore', and they will automatically be granted permission.

Existing users' rights to send messages should have remained untouched – let me know if there are any problems.

I have also decreased the number of private messages any user can send to 3 and increased the time between posts to 90 seconds. Which should slow any future spammer down substantially, allowing us to act before everyone's inconvenienced.

Of course, if you appreciated Harrison's email, no harm done.

thanks,

Dom

Dom, I posted a new thread, then tried to write to Merran and got the new "your IP sent a message within the last 120 seconds" 'thing', and when I tried a couple of mins later, I was still getting the same message. Fingers crossed that enough time has elapsed while I've been writing this for me to proceed.

Slightly tipsy. I tried to make sense here, honest.

How will any fadey challengers ever get up to 8000 having to wait 2 minutes to post a stinging emoticon the place will will collapse under the strain of having 2 minutes to cool down or compose an intelligent reply.

Note to self: take more notice of what the fuck you're doing.

Okay..so typing that last post AND this one, will delay the time before I can write to her. This is so bad for my head right now.  :|

PS. And then I couldn't post this because apparently it was too soon after trying to write to her. This is maddening.  :-D   Fuck you, Harrison.

Wow, 120 seconds is a long time mate.  Sometimes on the threads we get going pretty quick with the back and forth.  Is 60 seconds possible?

It's now 90 seconds. That ought to do it. If the spam problem doesn't reoccur in spite of my precautions, I'll reduce it again. Sorry it's annoying, but if we'd nabbed it last time a lot of people wouldn't have gotten that goddamned porn email.

The 120 second thing really fucked me around.  I'm sure I spent more than two minutes composing most posts; I'm a pedant after all. :-)  Also, you know, hic.

Damn, that sucks.  No more posting a snappy retort thirty seconds after someone has posted their....  I forget.  I haven't had a coffee or smoke yet.  All I can think of is "Now you're tired of fighting, fighting yourself!"; a line from Dead Star by Muse.  None of the other good parts of the song, just that bit.

Fuck you, subliminal messaging.

Oh, something just occured to me.

Dom, is it possible to remove that wait timer to people who have made a substantial amount of posts?  Like, remove the timer to people over 100, or 250 posts?

This could encourage others to posts; possibly a good and bad thing.

Either way, having no boundries to those of us who've already proven we're not here to send porn in a site message (A struggle most of us have to endure every day) could be done, couldn't it?
