Uploading attachments, eg images
« on: June 24, 2006, 11:21:12 AM »

I've become concerned about the amount of images being uploaded, and the potential for porn and other disturbing images to be put up by trollers. Also, while we have a lot of disk space, there is a limit, and some of the large images uploaded don't seem a particularly good use of it.

So I've decided to trial imposing restrictions on posting attachments, which includes images. If you want to be permitted to do so, PM a moderator and if they trust you, they'll enable it for you.

What criteria will they use? Basically if you're a forum regular who we can pretty much trust not to abuse the ability to display whatever image you like on our site, you'll be allowed to do so. And I'm by no means saying people shouldn't upload photos, or that they can't be frivolous/humorous etc. Mainly, I just don't want people we don't know to post porn etc on the site – or abortion images, as some visitors have tried to do in the past.

Of course, if the system proves unworkable, we'll think about changing it back.

cheers Dom

Wouldn't it still be possible to upload images to a third party website and then post a link to it?
or perhaps a thumbnail image?

Although I like the ability to do it, and it causes no grief to the chaser server, this is actually a slightly dodgy set up, because "real bad" images can still be linked into the forum, and there may well be copyright issues. This is because linked-in images give no indication where they are hosted, what copyright there is and no credit to the provider of the image. At a minimum, the URL of the image should really be displayed.

Not only that, linking to images on another server (especially if you use the [img ] tags) steals the bandwidth of that server, and if enough bandwidth is stolen the system admins generally get pissed and send a very nasty email to the webmaster here (either an email or lawyers)

Yak you posted porn - some guy sucking his unfeasibly long shlong, and then you used it in your Avatar.  We had complaints.  You are so not going to be in the Trusted Members list ( no pun intended)

Vagina with teeth?

But should we only allow trusted members to put text in?  I mean, you can be offensive in text, as well as in pics.
