I know this is usually the place to 'spray' celebs, but I am going to use it for a rap anyway!

When the question of who in the world with more money and power than just about anyone is the biggest philanthropist, the answer has to be Bill Gates.

He has just announced that he is stepping down from the top job at Microsoft, to concentrate full time on fixing a few of the world's problems.http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/D7893843-A859-4B44-BFEF-744EAF78E4E3.htm

It doesn't matter what you think of the man, he must be paid grudging respect for being just about the only member of the "TOP 10" Club who gives a flying fuck for anything besides themselves.

Good for you Bill, pity that you are the only lighthouse in a sea of excess.
I for one congratulate you.

WB :-)

Yes, it is good to see Bill doing this, if I had my head stuck in a computer like he has I would be wanting to do something else as well. Have to disagree with your lighthouse in the sea of excess though bob, it may just be the case that this lighthouse is turned on so that you saw it. There are other "lighthouses" out there, they are just not turned on by the media becuase it si not interesting.  :-)

So did I.  I used to love The Bill - for years, when the children were babies, my idea of a good Saturday night out was if they were asleep by 8.30 and I could watch The Bill in peace. *sigh*  But it's got a bit silly lately - too many stupid sucker women who should know better falling for evil sociopaths etc.

Last time I saw the figure, he had 29b in his trust (The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation). This is the single largest fund of this kind (by FAR) in the world. The interesting thing about this fund, is that it is private, and is administered by a few of his closest people (family/friends).

These are some very smart cookies (hmmm, coookies), so rather than throwing money at things to win votes or to mollycoddle media, to win the flavour of the day, or even to look good in front of friends, they investigate and spend money on research and drug development that will make a difference to the greatest number of world inhabitants, not the loudest.

Malaria for instance, doesn't occur a lot in the US or western countries, so the drug companies don't care about it too much. Go to Asia/Africa and you find major major problems from it, and yet there is not even a fully effective vaccine available. The Gates Foundation & GSK have been trialling new drugs in this area. (also, last year, the poms discovered an antibody which protects against the disease. Now the europeans are spending £17m on the problem as well - not quite 5b, but better than most others.)

Until proven otherwise I will say Good work Bill,
though the hell he puts 90% of the worlds computer users through most days must tarnish his soul somewhat.
I wonder if the Nobel Peace Prize people run Windows?

I actually asked him once how he would like to be remembered, and at the time he had no particular interest in philanthropy, after all he had a company to run.

Anyway, I'm sure standing back and looking at "the world affected by Windows", he thought he'd better do something about it! As any Windows support desk will tell you, the problems are incurable, so I suspect Bill thought it might be easier to cure Malaria and/or Aids etc  :-)

Actually Warren Buffett (second to Bill Gates in the worlds richest dude stakes) Just gave another $31b to the Bill Gates foundation (and he is giving another $6b to other charities).

Oh, and Thal, the foundation has $60b in it nowadays. (well make that $91b now).
