Prkash Singh VC (1 April 1913, Jammu & Kashmir - 17 February 1945) was an Indian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

He was 27 years old, and a Jemadar in the 4 /, 13th Frontier Force Rifles, Indian Army during the Second World War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.

On 16/17 February 1945 at Kanlan Ywathit, Burma (now Myanmar), Jemadar Prakash Singh was commanding a platoon which took the main weight of fierce enemy attacks. He was wounded in both ankles and relieved of his command, but when his second-in-command was also wounded, he crawled back and took command again, directing operations and encouraging his men. Being again wounded in both legs, he continued to direct the defense, dragging himself from place to place by his hands. When wounded a third time and dying, he lay shouting the Dogra war-cry, so inspiring his company that the enemy were finally driven off.

Dublin Area Rapid Transit

The Dublin Area Rapid Transit (DART), or Mearlíne Átha Cliath in Irish, is part of the suburban railway network in Ireland, running mainly along the coastline of Dublin Bay on the Trans-Dublin route, from Greystones in County Wicklow, through Dublin to Howth and Malahide in County Dublin. Trains are powered via a 1500v DC overhead catenary along a short section of the Irish standard gauge rail network of 5' 3" (1600-mm). The national rail operator, Iarnród Éireann (IE), administers the DART system. On its inception in 1984, the DART was run by Coras Iompair Éireann (CIÉ) of whom IE is now a subsidiary. Part of the DART route, from the city centre to Dún Laoghaire, is of historic note — it was the first railway in Ireland, opening as the Dublin and Kingstown Railway on 17 December 1834. The DART forms part of the Dublin Suburban Rail network.

Sonia Rykiel

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sonia Rykiel (who was born the 25 may 1930 in Paris, France of Polish Jewish extraction) is a French fashion designer.
Sonia Rykiel was born in Paris, France in 1930. At the age of 17, she was employed to dress the window displays in a Parisian textile store. Sonia was married to the owner of a boutique which sold elegant clothing. In 1962 she just couldn't find any soft sweaters to wear when she was pregnant. So she used a supplier to her husband from Venice to design her own.
Sonia Rykiel created her first maternity dresses and tiny sweater. The sweater is her symbol and she was crowned "Queen of Knits" by the Americans in 1967. The sweater went back 7 times for alterations before she was satisfied with it. From then, she has experimented with seams inside out, took away the hem and lining, and created a range of fragrances of which '7e Sens' was the first. This first creation was called the Poor boy Sweater, and she started selling it from her husbands label "Laura". It made the cover of ELLE fashion magazine, and brought her fame.
She later became the first designer to put seams on the outside of a garment, and to print words on her sweaters. In particular, she favours long clinging sweaters or small cropped pullovers, large rolled-back cuffs and long shawls. Her colours are usually beige, grey, dark blue and charcoal.
Rykiel has written many books, including an A to Z of fashion, and a collection of children’s stories.
In 1980 she was voted one of the world's 10 most elegant women. She proved that knitwear can follow any trend. Rykiel also hit the current idea of the big soft fun fur done as a huge bubble of colour, in her case baby pink, purple knitted fox or teal-blue Mongolian lamb. During Paris Fashion Week in October 2003, Sonia Rykiel showed her own collection for next spring. There were also gorgeous ruffled dresses in vintage floral and polka dot prints and smart hounds tooth coats.
During Paris Fashion Week in October 2004, Sonia Rykiel showed her collection for next spring. There were smiling faces at her show seeing models in flower-child knit dresses and big 1970s Paddington Bear hats.
Sonia and her daughter Nathalie have decided to bring Paris to New York. In February 2005 Henri Bendel launched an in-store shop for the Sonia Rykel Woman line. It will almost certainly be as successful as in France. There are three Sonia Rykiel locations in the U.S. and they are in New York , Boston and Guam.

Dik-dik

Dik-diks, named for the sound they make when alarmed, are small antelopes of the Genus Madoqua that live in the bush of southern and eastern Africa. Dik-diks stand 30–40 cm at the shoulder and weigh 3–5 kg. They have an elongated snout and a soft coat that is grey or brownish above and white below. The hair on the crown forms an upright tuft that sometimes partially conceals the short, ringed horns of the male.

"We Are One" is a song by the American hard rock group Kiss released on their 1998 album Psycho Circus.

Written and sung by vocalist/bassist Gene Simmons, the song is a return to his Beatles-reminiscent melodic style he previously displayed on songs like "Great Expectations", "See You Tonite", "Mr. Make Believe", and "You're All That I Want".

Simmons and Kiss vocalist/guitarist Paul Stanley are the only two members of the group to have performed on the song, with Stanley playing bass, and Simmons playing rhythm guitar. Session musicians Tommy Thayer and Kevin Valentine perform guitar and drum parts repectively.[1]

Released as a single in 1998, the song charted in only a few countries, and failed to chart in the United States and United Kingdom.[2]

February 30

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article is about legitimate use of February 30 in calendar systems. For February 30 and 31 as non-existent dates, see February 31.

February 30 occurs in some calendars, unlike the Gregorian calendar, where February contains only 28 or 29 days.

Swedish calendar

Swedish calendar February 1712The Swedish realm (which included Finland at the time) planned to change from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar beginning in 1700 by omitting the leap days for the next 40 years. Contrary to the plan, both 1704 and 1708 were leap years in Sweden. This brought the Swedish calendar one day ahead of the Julian calendar but still ten days behind the Gregorian calendar.

The Julian calendar was restored when, in 1712, two leap days were added, thus giving that year a 30th of February. That date corresponded to February 29 in Julian and March 11 in Gregorian counting. The Swedish changeover to the Gregorian calendar was finally accomplished in 1753.

Soviet revolutionary calendar
In 1929 the Soviet Union introduced a revolutionary calendar in which every working month had 30 days and the remaining 5 or 6 days were 'monthless' holidays. In this calendar, there existed a 30th of February in the years 1930 and 1931; the revolutionary calendar was abandoned in 1931.

However, the Gregorian calendar continued to be used in the Soviet Union during this period. This is confirmed by consulting the successive dates in daily issues of Pravda, the official newspaper of the Communist Party, in which February had 28 days in 1930 and 1931, but had 29 days in 1932, which agrees with the rules of the Gregorian calendar.

Early Julian calendar
The 13th century scholar Sacrobosco claimed that in the Julian calendar February had 30 days in leap years between 45 BC and 8 BC, when Augustus shortened February to give the month of August named after him the same length as the month of July named after his adoptive uncle Julius Caesar. However, all other historical evidence relating to the Julian calendar during this period refutes Sacrobosco, including dual dates with the Alexandrian calendar. See Julian calendar: Month lengths.

Artificial calendars
Artificial calendars may also have thirty February dates. For example, in a climate model the statistics may be simplified by having twelve months of thirty days. The Hadley Centre General Circulation Model is an example.

Emo (slang)

Emo (pronounced /ˈiːmoʊ/) is a somewhat ambiguous slang term most frequently used to describe a fashion or subculture linked to post-hardcore fashion and its subculture. The slang term emo is best known for referring to fashion style[1] and attitude. Emo may describe this fashion or emo music, or a general emotional state (as in to "feel emo"). It is also, sometimes pejoratively, used to identify someone fitting a particular emo stereotype or category.

[edit] Music
Main article: Emo (music)
The term emo originated in the 1980s to describe a genre of music stemming from the emotional punk scene in Washington, D.C. Early bands labeled emo (or sometimes emocore) in this scene included Rites of Spring, Embrace, and Rain.[2][3][4] The term emo as a music genre has become broader and broader with time, and now is loosely understood to mean "rock music with emotionally-based lyrics or effect." It is used to describe a broad, poorly defined group of bands that might include nearly any popular (or unpopular) rock band. Well known examples are hawthorne heights silverstein my chemical romance. The term's definition is the subject of debate. [5][2][3] Emo is now often used to refer to a person's fashion, personality, or both, as well as a musical category.

[edit] Personality
When referring to a person's personality and attitude, most definitions of emo hold that an emo person is emotionally candid, sensitive, shy, introverted, glum, and quiet.[6] Depression and broken-heartedness are sometimes used to describe the emo personality. The factuality of broken-heartedness as a personality trait stems from the opinion that emo music contains multiple references to unrequited love, emotional and relationship problems.

[edit] Poetry
Emo personality is also often connected with writing poetry that addresses confusion, depression, loneliness, the futility of life, and anger, all resulting from the world's inability to understand the author. Emo poetry usually combines a highly emotional tone, stream of consciousness writing, a simple (ABAB) or nonexistent rhyme scheme, references to the flesh, especially the heart, heavy use of dark or depressing adjectives, and concern over the mutability of time, love, or both. A common theme is the author's feeling that life is pain, or how misunderstood the author feels.[7]

[edit] Fashion
By almost all current definitions, Emo clothing is characterized by tight jeans on males and females alike, long fringe (bangs) brushed to one side of the face or over one or both eyes, dyed black, straightened hair, tight t-shirts which often bear the names of rock bands (or other designed shirts), studded belts, belt buckles, canvas sneakers or skate shoes or other black shoes (often old and beaten up) and, if they wear glasses, they will often be thick, black horn-rimmed glasses.[5][2][8][6][9][10] Emo fashion has changed with time; early trends included haircuts similar to those worn by the Romulans and Vulcans in Star Trek, tightly fitting sweaters, button-down shirts, and work jackets (often called gas station jackets).[8]

[edit] Criticism
In the years since emo music's rise in popularity, it has attracted criticism, often severe.[11] The term emo itself is sometimes used pejoratively, to suggest that the target is overly emotional.[6] Emo has been characterized as a fad that will be discarded and forgotten in the near future.[12] Recent trends in music has also been compared to the teen pop of 1990s boy bands.[12][13] Critics cast the music as lacking any artistic merit and/or musical skill, the fashion as "embarrassing," and the people as imagining or pretending that they lead harsh, painful lives when they actually live in comfortable, middle- to upper-class homes.

Members of the emo subculture are portrayed as melodramatic, self-pitying teenagers who pour their efforts into writing poetry. The current emo subculture has been called a "sad caricature" of what it once was.[11] Some have accused emo of celebrating self-harm, which those who do usually refer to "helping ease the pain[14]. However, physical trauma triggers the release of beta-endorphins, which improves relaxation and reduces physical pain. Some assert that within some emo circles it is cool to pretend to be suicidal and self-harming.[12] Critics have gone so far as to contend that the emos influence is likely to cause youth to commit suicide.[14][12]

Part of the series on Australian criminals

Glenn Wheatley (born 1948) is an Australian artist manager and entertainment industry executive. In 2007, he was found guilty of channelling more than $650,000 through tax fraud schemes. [1] Wheatley was sentenced to 15 months in prison. [2]

Wheatley began his career as a musician in Brisbane in the mid-1960s and in the late 1960s became nationally famous as a member of leading pop-rock band The Masters Apprentices. He was also the long time manager of Australian singer John Farnham.

Joseph Leslie Theodore Taylor, known as Squizzy Taylor, due to a droop in his left eye.Joseph Leslie Theodore Taylor (Squizzy Taylor) (b. 29 June 1888 in Brighton, Victoria d. 27 October 1927) was a Melbourne based gangster. He earned the nickname 'Squizzy' due to an ulcerated, droopy left eyelid.

He began his working life as jockey on John Wren's pony circuit and at the age of 18 received his first conviction for assault. He went from petty crimes, such as pickpocketing to stand over activities such as murder and armed robbery.

He was involved in the 1915 Melbourne Trades Hall burglary in which a policeman was shot, in 1916 he was acquitted of the murder of taxi driver William Haines, and in 1919 he was a key figure in the 'Fitzroy Vendetta' gang warfare.

A spiv, Taylor enjoyed a fearsome reputation during the twenties and derived his income from prostitution, sly grog, armed robbery, cocaine dealing and protection rackets. Taylor was able to get away with most of his crimes due to his role as a protected police informer and his employee, Paddy Boardman, who rigged juries.

After release from prison Taylor continued criminal activities, but concentrated his efforts on race-tracks. Involved in selling cocaine, he came into conflict with several Sydney gangsters. He was wounded in a gunfight with one of them, John 'Snowy' Cutmore, at a house in Barkly Street, in the Melbourne suburb of Carlton, and died at St Vincent's Hospital, Fitzroy, on 27 October 1927. Survived by his wife and by a daughter of his first marriage, Taylor was buried with Anglican rites in Brighton cemetery.

Squizzy Taylor was an associate of John Wren. Author Frank Hardy’s 1950 novel ‘Power Without Glory’ is based on John Wren and his empire. Squizzy Taylor is portrayed in the novel as Snoopy Tanner. In 1976 Frank Howson and Barry Ferrier wrote an opera based on Taylor's life entitled Squizzy, it was broadcast by ABC Radio and 3CR and garnered much media attention. The title role was performed by Men At Work's Colin Hay. A major stage production was in the early stages of being mounted, to be directed by Nigel Triffitt of Tap Dogs fame when a film version by a rival producer was announced causing the stage production to fall over. The film, loosely based on Taylor's life, titled Squizzy Taylor was released in 1982 but flopped with critics and public alike.

Squizzy Taylor was also featured in Robert Newton's Runner (Penguin Books, 2005) which is set in the streets of Richmond in 1919.
