Yep, Luke is the heroes for boys, uncomplicated, clean, simple truth and justice kind of guy. Lucas' writing was generally ordinary even back then. Look at most of the characters and they're walking cliches, even Han is the stereotypical raffish pirate bad boy type.
Didn't Lucas flat out state that that was what he was going for, deliberately makign them universal/stereotyped to be more identifiable.
Of course, he's now claiming that Greebo always shot first, you just can't see it too well in the original.
although who is worst out of Hamill and the young Luke I can't say, that's a race below the bottom...
Not a fair test, they are limited by what they have to work with. I didn't mind Hamill, I think he was more overshadowed by stronger characters like Han, Vader and the Emperor all the time, rather than being weak in of himself.
I still think the movies hold up well, shiny new CGI isn't everything.
Hell,
Eragon was
A New Hope almost scene for scene shot as a modern fantasy film, but utterly rubbish despite all the new fangled technology. And Sienna Guillory couldn't be in
Resident Evil 3 because she was in that...though it made something like $170 million, IIRC.
