Guide to contributing to The Chaser
« on: September 17, 2004, 01:09:50 AM »

We get quite a lot of emails from people who want to contribute to The Chaser, and we dont always have time to reply to all of them. So we thought wed set up a forum so you could post your stories and headline ideas here. That way we can browse through and look at everything in one go, and you can immediately get a reaction from other forum users.

We wont - and in fact nobody should - use any of your ideas elsewhere without asking you first. But bear in mind that its possible for two different people to think of very similar ideas.

Just so you know, while we love finding new writers, writing for The Chaser is first and foremost a labour of love - at least initially. While we do pay our very regular contributors, we generally ask new writers to contribute for some time without being paid. (We all did for years, and our budget is still extremely limited.)

Please also bear in mind that senses of humour are subjective. We often disagree violently amongst ourselves about whether an idea is funny, so please dont be offended if we decide not to use an idea that you think is hilarious (and may very well be). Unfortunately, material included in The Chaser has to conform to the majority of the editors senses of humour - its the same rule we apply to ourselves.

Thanks a lot for posting, and we look forward to reading your contribution.

Is it possible to make this post "sticky" with your forum software?

If youre not aware.. that means that this post remains at the top

of the list, even years after its been written.

Thanks David. Although in broad terms I am very unaware, I have made that post sticky.

You guys crack me up! Imagine inviting Joe Public (or Jo Public, for that
matter) to write unsolicited Chaser stories! As if! (Translation for New
Zealanders: Ez uf!)

Always first with the great gags, arent you! Ha! Ill bet youre behind
Pauline Hanson running for a Queensland Senate seat.

Please tell me its a joke and youre behind it.

Please! For Gods sake, please!

You say the chaser is a labour of love. But is it a full time job for you all as well?

(And no, my Valentine poem to the US as read on Today Today was NOT
the lamest. I was quite proud of that actually)

Hey just a few more suggestions - as people have been doing, please start a new topic when you post a story, so others can comment.

Also, please be kind about other peoples stuff. Chaser stories are very to write, and the only way to get good at them is practice and feedback - hence this forum.

Couple of general tips, though:

In style terms, make it read as much like a real news article as you can, even if its very silly.
Short is good, and try to end each para with a punchline.
The headline is crucial, and should be funny in its own right. We generally spend as much time on headlines as on the actual text of articles. And we usually get new writers to pitch headlines rather than completed articles, so we can suggest which ones we think are goers because they nail a particular satirical point (the angle), or are just funny idea, or true observations. Generally, if the headline (ie overall concept) isnt right, it doesnt matter how good the gags in the article are.
Anyway, enough lecturing from me, and well done to those brave enough to actually post articles...

If I get drunk and do a streak, is that contributing to the Chaser?

What a great idea, and great way to encourage people to write comedy and learn. Im all for anything that gets people to engage in creative endevours, and its great to sponsor a place that will hopefully be constructive and encouraging. Good onya, Chaser boys! Its always great to remember to mentor the next generation of comedy writers and performers.
